THE RIGHT THING TO DO

As we have discussed in the past week, disgraced Superior Court Judge John R. Downey who so embarrassed himself and the Governor with his legally deficient pronouncements about the rights of illegal immigrants has more problems. The Judges comments as you know sunk his ill advised nomination to the State Appellate Court. Now it seems a lawyer from Branford, Bruce P. Matzkin has filed a formal complaint against the judge.

According to the Hartford Courant Attorney Matzkin asked the state's Judicial Review Council to investigate Downey "for violations of the canons of the Code of Judicial Conduct that raise a substantial question as to his fitness for office."

In addition to his legally stupid comments regarding the rights of immigrants, Judge Downey managed to even upset every other person even if they agreed with him on the immigrant issue by praising the late Strum Thurmond a well known racist. The good judge has made more trouble for the Governor and himself than he is worth. The state needs to send a message and cut this Neanderthal loose before cases he decided start to get reviewed ( not that this is not already under way in some office) that may result in even the guilty going free based on the perceived bias of any court during any case that the judge presided over. How ironic a failed nominee to the State Appellate Court may be the catalyst for some of its most interesting cases in the next few months. Do not worry the State Judicial Branch ( the most inept of the three and the other two are pretty darn good) will find some way to screw this complaint up and the man will be sitting on the State Supreme Court by Thanksgiving. I am just lamenting the possibility that’s all.
